Q: How much time will I need to set aside to practice?

A: This is a difficult question to answer. Everyone is familiar with the phrase 'practice makes perfect' but just how much practice does it take to come anywhere close to 'perfect'? The answer is 'A LOT'!! Let's forget about being 'perfect'. What are your personal goals? Discuss them with your prosepective teachers and ask them what they think. For a beginner to make progress it is important to be able to set aside, at the very least, 20-30 minutes of practice five days a week. The more time you are able to set aside each day on a regular basis, the more progress you are likely to make. However, the quality of each practice session is just as important, if not more important, than the quantity of time. Having specific goals to work towards as well as applying a healthy 'problem-solving' approach to your practice sessions will help you accomplish more in less time. There is no miracle approach though - you will need to practice if you want to progress.
